Metal sheds are constructed with sheet metal usually made from corrugated iron, aluminum or galvanized steel which is then joined to a metal frame. If you are looking for a shed which will stand the test of time and be resistant to fires, rotting or pest problems such as termites, then a metal shed may be best for you. Despite these advantages, the metal can still go rusty. This is usually the case if the steel is not galvanized so try to remember this point.
Also remember that if a shed is made from thin sheets of metal, then this can sometimes be dented quite easily. This could be more of a problem for you if vandalism is a problem in your local area especially if you keep very valuable equipment inside. If you use your shed for business it could be more of a target and you should make sure you are insured against potential loses. Bear in mind as well that metal can be damaged by long term ice and snow, so where possible you should clear this as soon as you can.
In terms of a foundation for metal sheds, you should secure the shed to a concrete base with good quality, durable screws. This is because a metal shed is more vulnerable to wind damage because of the much heavier weight. Therefore it they are not secure they could potentially cause a lot of damage to either you or your property.
Wooden sheds have the flexibility of being able to blend into the natural look of a garden more. This is the thing that many people like about them and will often paint or varnish them to suit their own tastes and garden landscape.
You should also make an effort to use varnishes or wood treatments because over time wood can start to go rotten or split. Therefore using a good treatment product can prevent this from happening. Using measures such as this can also help to prevent long term damage such as signs of mold which can make the shed look very old and defeat the object of it blending in with the garden.
Wooden sheds also tend to need more regular maintenance to avoid long term problems like those listed above. However it is worth taking a little time to carry out this work as you will see the long term benefits.
Many hardware stores and shops will supply a variety of wood stains, preservatives and varnishes which can help protect against the effects of UV light, rain and snow as well as wood mites. You don’t have to worry about losing the natural look of the shed either because these wood stains will come in a wide range of natural colours.
It is worth knowing that there are certain types of wood which are naturally resistant to rain damage. An example of this is cedar which is ideal for this. You may find that you pay a little more for sheds that have been made out of this material but hopefully you will benefit from less rain-related maintenance problems.
