When you’ve made the decision to get a tattoo and considered the pros and negatives of having an everlasting marking on your body, you will then perhaps be asking what is the best course of action to take when getting the design? Here are three basic steps towards choosing a tattoo that you will appreciate and that is also expertly designed.

You don’t want to take up too much of the tat designer’s time, so make sure that you enter the shop equipped with a drawing of what you want your tattoo pattern to look like. Most folks are looking to obtain a tattoo for sentimental reasons. For example, they may want to tattoo the name of their kids on their body eternally.

Other people want body art to be cute and effortless like a flower or an angel. Whatever the drawing, you have to have the design either with you or have already been and found it in the shop, tattoo artists do not usually do freehand work, they must follow a pattern.

Along with the pattern think about what colors to include with your tattoo. Your own natural skin shade may make a difference. If you are really pale, white may not be a good tattoo tint for you. This is where the expertise of the tattoo artist can be helpful to make adjustments so the tattoo looks great on you.

It may go without saying that a huge decision to make is where on your body to have the tattoo placed. A tattoo that you are getting to show off to everyone can go on your hand, ankle or even neck or face. But if it is a tattoo you are getting just for your own pleasure or part of a private language with someone special, placing it on your upper leg or somewhere else that is usually covered is a good choice.

Keep in mind when selecting where on your body to show off your tattoo that this design is going to be visible for the rest of your life. It will be there when you are an adult, a PTA member, working for a business and even when you are a grandparent. So you might not go with “I love Satan” on your forehead knowing that could be a problem for future roles you will fill.

Last of all, you are going to find a tattoo parlor. The best way to make this conclusion is based on personal recommendations from people who have had tattoos in the past. Individuals who have been through the tattoo process will be best able to advise you on how clean a certain tattoo parlor is, whether their body art got infected later, and who was the best artist in any given location.

Before you take the plunge and get your tat, take the right steps and collect as much information as possible, always sleep on a decision like this so that you don’t make an impulsive decision - don’t forget that this is a decision that you will be required to live with forever.
