There are many poker chips available on the market today. Not only can a prospective buyer choose the type of chips that they want; they can also choose the type of case, type of dealer button, and brand of cards. There are a lot of options available to today’s poker chip set buyer.

Most poker chip sets consist of a case, poker chips, a dealer button, two decks of cards, and five dice. That’s basically where the similarities end. Some poker sets are meant to be mobile while others are meant to stay home. You need to consider not only what kind of set you what, but also where you’ll be taking it.

If your poker set is staying home, I’d go with the swanky poker chip display boxes. Some of these poker chip sets look like pieces of fine furniture. They’re generally made of high quality wood and have a glass top to show off your poker chips. Drawers swing open to reveal little areas for your card decks and dealer button to rest. These sets tend to be expensive not only because of the high quality of wood used for them, but because you’re going to want to have high quality clay chips in this beauty. I mean, who shows off composite chips?

However, if you’re planning on taking your chips from one home game to the next, then you’ll need a high quality carrying case. Fortunately, most poker chip sets come with just such a case. In this instance, you have a choice between aluminum or wood. Every once and a while you’ll see a set encased in clear plastic, but wood and aluminum are by far the most used materials.

While there is something to be said for walking into a room with a beautiful mahogany case and popping it open, I prefer aluminum for my carrying cases. The primary reason is because wood, no matter how hard, will chip eventually and that beautiful case will start to look run down.

Aluminum can take a beating and still endure. Even when it gets a few bumps it is still not too expensive to replace than a classy looking wood case.

If you are a serious poker player you will need a poker chips set. However before you decide which one to get you need to think whether you will be keeping your set at home or traveling. Then you can select the cards and chips you need in your set and the right carrying case.
